Résidence Arts et Sciences : L’art Kwoma et le FORESTT-HUB s'unissent

Depuis octobre 2024, l’artiste Fabrice Hyber est associé au programme de recherche FORESTT-HUB codirigé par Maya Leroy d’AgroParisTech et Nicolas Picard du GIP ECOFOR, dans une opération de cocréation Arts et Sciences pour les forêts : « IMAGES POUR LES FORETS ».  

Ce partenariat, co-financé par la Chaire « Sous le paysage » portée par l’association Fénelon avec le soutien de Nantes Université et l’école des beaux-arts de Nantes St Nazaire, réunit artistes et chercheurs autour d’un même objectif : croiser leurs recherches respectives et leurs regards scientifiques et sensibles pour cocréer afin d’inventer de nouveaux imaginaires et de nouvelles pratiques pour les forêts.

Le FORESTT-HUB, projet ciblé du PEPR FORESTT sur la Résilience des forêts (40 M€ sur 7 ans piloté par l’INRAE, copilotage CIRAD et CNRS) - embarque 15 partenaires dont le CNRS, en particulier avec des chercheurs en écologie, sociologie, gestion, histoire et archéologie. Il a pour ambition de faire dialoguer les connaissances et fournir une analyse scientifique aux débats et politiques liés aux forêts, et doit contribuer à l’accélération des transitions environnementales en faveur du vivant et développer la créativité dans la conduite de ces transformations socio-écologiques.

C'est dans la Vallée, en Vendée, lieu créé par Fabrice Hyber qu'artistes et chercheurs se retrouvent pour travailler. Chaque année des résidences d’artistes des forêts du Monde (Amériques, Afrique, Océanie) sont donc organisées. Après Joseca artiste Yanomami du Brésil en 2025, cette année se sont Agatoak Ronny Kowspi et Robin Chiphowka Kowspi, artistes Kwoma  de la région du Sepik en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée qui viendront du 11 au 28 mai 2026. Les échanges se feront avec  Meredith Root-Bernstein, écologue, directrice de recherche du CNRS au Centre d'Ecologie et des Sciences de la Conservation (CESCO) et chercheuse au sein du FORESTT-HUB. Une écologue de Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée, Miriam Supuma, sera également présente.  La résidence sera l’occasion de programmer un séminaire avec production de podcast, auquel seront conviés d'autres chercheurs externes au programme, le philosophe Maxime Rovere, et tout particulièrement Magali Mélandri, conservatrice, responsable Océanie et Insulinde au musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, qui accompagne et soutient les artistes Kwoma durant leur séjour en France. Des expositions sont prévues.

Since October 2024, the artist Fabrice Hyber has been involved in the FORESTT-HUB research programme, co-directed by Maya Leroy of AgroParisTech and Nicolas Picard of GIP ECOFOR, as part of a collaborative Arts and Sciences initiative for forests: ‘IMAGES POUR LES FORETS’ ("Images for forests").

This partnership, co-funded by the “Sous le paysage” ("Under the landscape") Chair run by the Fénelon association with the support of the University of Nantes and the Nantes St Nazaire School of Fine Arts, brings together artists and researchers around a shared objective: to combine their respective research and their scientific and artistic perspectives to co-create, with a view to inventing new imaginaries and new practices for forests.

The FORESTT-HUB, a targeted project of the PEPR FORESTT on Forest Resilience (€40 million over 7 years led by INRAE, co-led by CIRAD and CNRS) – brings together 15 partners, including the CNRS, in particular with researchers in ecology, sociology, management, history and archaeology. Its aim is to foster dialogue between different fields of knowledge and provide scientific analysis for debates and policies relating to forests, and it is intended to help accelerate environmental transitions that benefit living organisms and foster creativity in driving these socio-ecological transformations.

It is in La Vallée, in the Vendée – a space created by Fabrice Hyber – that artists and researchers come together to work. Every year, artist residencies are organised for artists from the forests of the world (the Americas, Africa, Oceania). Following Joseca, a Yanomami artist from Brazil in 2025, this year it is Agatoak Ronny Kowspi and Robin Chiphowka Kowspi, Kwoma artists from the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea, who will be visiting from 11 to 28 May 2026. Discussions will take place with Meredith Root-Bernstein, an ecologist, CNRS research director at the Centre for Ecology and Conservation Sciences (CESCO) and a researcher at FORESTT-HUB. Miriam Supuma, an ecologist from Papua New Guinea, will also be present. The residency will provide an opportunity to organise a seminar with a podcast production, to which other researchers outside the programme will be invited, including the philosopher Maxime Rovere, and in particular Magali Mélandri, curator and head of the Oceania and Insulinde department at the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, who will accompany and support the Kwoma artists during their stay in France. Exhibitions are planned.
