Support for the Organization of Scientific Events (2026–2030)

This action, led by the Steering and Governance project of the PEPR FORESTT, aims to support the organization of scientific events (conferences, seminars, workshops, study days, summer schools, forums and round tables, science days, international meetings, etc.) related to the themes of the research program. Its objective is to contribute to their scientific quality, enhance their visibility, and strengthen their integration within existing research networks.

General framework

1. Total annual budget available : €8,000

2. Types of support available

  • Scientific support : contribution to the design and/or finalization of the scientific program ;
  • Organizational support : logistical assistance, communication support, etc.;
  • Financial support : between €1,000 and €6,000, depending on the scale of the event.

Note : As a partner of the event, the program will provide its financial contribution through the direct coverage of an invoice related to the organization of the event, in accordance with PEPR funding eligibility rules (travel, catering, audiovisual services, communication, etc.).

3. Expected counterparts

  • Visible acknowledgment of the program as a partner on communication materials (this does not constitute sponsorship);
  • The possibility, where relevant, for a representative of the program to speak during the event;
  • The possibility to display up to two roll-up banners presenting the program and its research projects, subject to venue constraints;
  • Submission of a brief event report (half a page plus one to three photographs) within one week following the event, for the purpose of communicating about the program’s activities.

Note: For photographs, please ensure that individuals are not identifiable or have given their prior written consent for their image to be used as part of the event’s communication.

Eligibility criteria

  • The event must address themes directly related to one or more of the four scientific challenges of the PEPR FORESTT program;
  • The event must demonstrate a clear scientific ambition (and not be limited to outreach or popularization activities);
  • The event mustn't be organized as part of a research project already funded by the PEPR FORESTT program;
  • Request support at least six months prior to the event;
  • Allow for exchanges with the program management team on the scientific framing of the event in advance.

Application and selection process

  1. Submission of the application by sending the dedicated form (see below) to equipe@pepr-forestt.fr, by 30 June of year n for an event scheduled in year n+1;
  2. Evaluation of applications by the program’s Executive Committee;
  3. Response provided within three weeks;
  4. Signature of a statement of intent (funding decision).

Note : Priority will be given to applications addressing scientific themes that fall within the four PEPR scientific challenges but are still underrepresented among the projects already funded by the program, as well as to applications that strengthen links with stakeholders.

3rd “Living Earth” Meetings: “Naturally! Forests and Humanity” (6–8 December 2024, Rouen)
  • Organized by the BioGée Federation, this event took place at the Halle aux Toiles in Rouen at the end of 2024. It brought together around 300 participants (high school students, members of the general public, scientists and other forest-sector professionals) over three days.
    These rich exchanges highlighted the contribution of science in addressing the environmental challenges faced by forests and opened avenues for reflection on how to preserve trees and their ecosystems.

International Agricultural Show (SIA) 2025 (22 February–2 March 2025, Paris)
  • On the occasion of the 2025 International Agricultural Show, the UMR Silva designed an interactive wooden model, handcrafted by artist Margot Behr. Fully modular, it helps the general public visualize the combined effects of climate, soil and stand type on drought intensity in forests.
    The aim is also to foster discussion on associated risks and solutions to mitigate the intensity and frequency of water stress affecting trees.
  • The first use of this model was a success, facilitating dialogue with audiences of all ages and backgrounds. This educational tool will be reused in the Mille-Feuille participatory research projects, which explore links between silviculture, stand composition and drought. Led by Nathalie Bréda and the association Tous Chercheurs, these projects involve middle-school students, citizens and forest managers, thereby strengthening the production of new scientific knowledge on forests managed under different silvicultural pathways.

Conference “Our Forests Tomorrow: Understanding, Passing On, Acting” (21–22 March 2025, Paris)
  • This major interdisciplinary conference was organized by the Institut de France, the Académie des sciences and the Château de Chantilly, in partnership with The Conversation media outlet and the PEPR FORESTT research program.
    Over two days, lectures and round tables open to a wide audience brought together researchers, experts, forest managers and artists to highlight the many dimensions of forests in our society : spaces for well-being, reservoirs of biodiversity, and natural heritage to be preserved. From early artists and naturalists who shaped the collective imagination of forests to contemporary climate-change challenges, speakers explored the evolving relationship between society and this ecosystem.

International Scientific Film Festival – Labeling of a Scientific Film Screening (9 October 2025, Paris)
  • Organized by the Association Science & Television from 3 to 27 October, this festival presents free screenings of a selection of the best recent French and international scientific documentaries, in all formats and for all audiences.
  • The PEPR FORESTT program is labeling two screenings of the film “Wild Worlds – Bats, Sentinels of the Forest”, directed by Claire Judrin and produced by Galatée Films. These screenings will take place on 9 October at 11:00 a.m. and 1:45 p.m., with students from grades CM1–CM2–6e.
    Kévin Darras, a researcher in ecoacoustics involved in the MONITORING targeted project, which aims to deploy nationwide bat monitoring, will answer students’ questions following the screenings.

Science Mediation Documentary “Les Rayons Ligneux” (Autumn 2025 – Spring 2026)
  • Yannig, Antoine and Maxence, three recent graduates of the Master’s program in Wood Sciences at the University of Montpellier, embarked on a three-month cycling journey across France and Europe (Germany, Switzerland, Italy). Camera in hand, they interviewed researchers, managers and stakeholders from the forest–wood sector.
    Their objective is to produce a documentary on the resilience of temperate forests in the face of global change. The guiding thread of this project is to explore forest adaptation, and that of the societies that depend on them, to climate change: What are the impacts of climate change on forests? What mechanisms and limits define the resilience of forest socio-ecosystems? What adaptation strategies exist?
    Filming began in September and will continue until December. Once editing is complete, the documentary will be widely disseminated: in schools, professional events, festivals, cinemas or on television.

Microclimate Ecology and Biogeography (MEB) Conference (1–5 June 2026, Montpellier)
  • The MEB network brings together numerous scientists working to understand microclimates and their impacts. Through data sharing and collaboration, the network seeks to advance knowledge on how microclimatic variability influences biodiversity and ecosystems worldwide.
  • As a large proportion of MEB scientists work on forest environments and their microclimates, much of the PEPR FORESTT consortium is likely to be interested in this international conference, which is expected to attract 150 to 300 participants.
    The FORESTT program and its MONITOR targeted project support this event by jointly funding the participation of one of the five keynote laboratories.

Symposium “Adapting Forest Management to Climate Change: Modulating Stand Composition and Density and Controlling Ungulate Pressure” (8–12 June 2026, Nogent-sur-Vernisson)
  • Organized by AnaEE France to mark the 10th anniversary of the OPTMix experimental platform, this symposium aims to bring together researchers and R&D engineers to discuss the effects of silvicultural practices on forest functioning in the context of climate change.
    It focuses on three factors studied at OPTMix: (1) tree species mixtures, (2) stand density, and (3) the presence of wild ungulates.
